What is Autism?

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts socially, and experiences the world. Symptoms can appear in early childhood and may include challenges with language, social cues, and repetitive behaviors. Early identification and assessment are important for accessing support and tailored interventions to help individuals thrive.

Autism Testing FAQs

Autism testing is a comprehensive evaluation designed to determine whether an individual meets criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It typically includes standardized assessments, clinical interviews, and observations.

We use the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition), which is considered the gold standard for autism assessment. Depending on age and language level, we select the appropriate module (Modules 2–4 for ages 9+ and adults). Cognitive testing may also be included as part of a neuropsychological evaluation.

Testing is recommended for individuals who:

  • Show challenges in social communication and interaction.
  • Exhibit repetitive behaviors or restricted interests.
  • Have difficulty with flexibility or sensory sensitivities.
The process typically involves:
  • Intake appointment (60 minutes)
  • Neuropsychological Testing sessions (3–4 hours depending on scope)
  • Feedback session (to review results and recommendations)
  • ADOS-2 Testing (2-4 hours depending on scope)
  • Feedback session (to review results and recommendations)

Coverage varies by insurance plan. Many plans cover autism evaluations when medically necessary. We recommend contacting your insurance provider for details. Our team can assist with verification.

You will need to provide the following prior to the first virtual appointment if available

  • Previous evaluations or school reports
  • Any relevant medical or developmental history

You will receive:

  • A feedback session to discuss results and next steps
  • A detailed report with diagnostic impressions (4-6 weeks after feedback)
  • Recommendations for interventions, therapies, and supports

If the individual has never had neuropsychological testing, cognitive assessment will be included to provide a full picture of strengths and challenges.

You will need to complete the intake paperwork and one of our Patient Care Coordinators will reach out to you to get you on the schedule.
